About My Work
My paintings originate from historical and old photographs pieced together with stories told to me by my mother and grandmother of post-war time England. Although many of the characters in my paintings are of a certain era, I try to bring to them a modern sensibility by isolating them from their “space” and placing them into a different scene, thus creating a new visual narrative.
In altering the fragmented scene from its original historical photograph, I often use atmospheric colors. Creams. yellows , browns or other thinly painted washes stream down the canvas, momentarily shattering the illusion of pictorial space.
I purposely leave the characters faces vague in order to keep within the memories of past stories, while at the same time allowing the viewer to insert his or her own narratives into the scene.
I was born in England and have made my home in San Francisco for the past several years.
